Have you made the focaccia buns yet? If so, here is a tasty roasted chicken focaccia sandwich recipe that you’re going to love! This simple sandwich is loaded with fresh vegetables, homemade mayonnaise, Havarti cheese and warm roasted chicken. It’s a quick and delicious option for lunch or dinner, especially on those busy nights.
What is Havarti Cheese?
This sandwich is prepared with an Italian style bread but guess what? The cheese is Danish! I love Danish cheeses, and Havarti is one of the best. It is a semi-soft cheese with a creamy texture and mild flavor that is perfect on roasted chicken focaccia sandwiches. If your roasted chicken is still warm when you put your sandwich together, the Havarti melts beautifully on top of the chicken. Additionally, it’s delicious whether the sandwich is prepared warm or cold!
In terms of nutrition, Havarti is relatively high in fat, which contributes to its rich flavor and smooth mouthfeel. It’s also a good source of calcium and protein.
Today, Havarti is produced not only in Denmark but also the United States and Canada. In fact, good old Wisconsin is one of the largest producers outside of Europe.
Despite its global reach, Havarti has retained its Danish identity and was granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status in the European Union in 2019, ensuring that only cheese produced in Denmark using traditional methods can be labeled as “Danish Havarti.”
If you would rather make your roasted chicken focaccia sandwich with more of an Italian style cheese, provolone is also great. It doesn’t change the sandwich much, but provolone has a different texture and bolder flavor than Havarti.
Preparation, Servings, and Storage
These sandwiches are quick to prepare in as little as 30 minutes, with the majority of the time being roasting the chicken. If you prefer to make them as a meal prep for the week, go ahead and roast the chicken breasts, slice, and refrigerate until you are ready to assemble the sandwich. It can be prepared warm or cold, and honestly, either way is tasty. This recipe yields four savory roasted chicken focaccia sandwiches, perfect for a family or lunchbox meals for the week. For storage, the focaccia buns can be stored at room temperature for up to four days. The other ingredients need to be refrigerated. Assemble the sandwiches prior to mealtime or before packing for lunch to prevent the focaccia from becoming soggy. Enjoy these roasted chicken focaccia sandwiches!
