Pinwheels are the easy go to for quick meals, appetizers, party food, and picnics. We make these especially on nights when we are running from one kid’s sporting event to the other. Above all, they are a lifesaver for the tag along kids that need to eat but there isn’t time to make a family meal. They are also great in their lunchboxes. These ham and swiss pinwheels are a delicious rolled up ham and swiss sandwich, that quite frankly, may be more delicious than a sandwich itself.
Ham and Swiss Pinwheel Ingredients
Flour Tortillas
I’m always going to recommend using homemade flour tortillas. Once you try them, nothing else will compare to their superior flavor and soft texture. They are prepared with natural ingredients and are free from food additives or preservatives.
Deli Ham
Deli ham can be either homemade or store-bought. In fact, making deli ham is pretty easy, but if you’re short on time opt for quality when choosing a brand. Choose certified organic to avoid synthetic pesticides, GMOs, as well as artificial additives. Additionally, look for no nitrates/nitrites, humane raising practices, and minimal ingredients. For example, brands like Applegate Black Forest Ham or Simply Nature Organic Black Forest Ham are fantastic choices.
Swiss Cheese
Swiss Cheese works well with ham because it has a slightly nutty, sweet flavor that complements the salty, savory taste of ham without overpowering it.
Cream cheese
Did you know you can make cream cheese? I have not done so yet, but there’s probably a cold winter day in my future that may strike my interest. Cream cheese is the base layer of these ham and swiss pinwheels with two purposes. It adds a creaminess to each bite but also serves as the binding of the tortilla when it is rolled and chilled.
Honey
Honey is blended in with the cream cheese for a natural sweetness. It is also an essential part of giving the cream cheese base a honey mustard flavor. Which leads us to the next ingredient!
Dijon Mustard
Dijon mustard imparts a bold, tangy flavor that balances the richness of ham and cheese. Its acidity enhances every bite, making it slightly spicy, slightly sweet, and deeply aromatic.
Poppyseeds
Though mild, poppy seeds contribute a slightly nutty, earthy undertone that complements the sweetness of honey and the tang of mustard. Poppy seeds add a delicate crunch that contrasts beautifully with the creamy smoothness of honey mustard. Plus, for the little kids, it’s just one of those ingredients that sparks interesting questions.
Romaine Lettuce
Romaine lettuce adds a crisp, satisfying bite that contrasts beautifully with the soft cheese and tender ham. That crunch adds texture and keeps the sandwich from feeling too dense or plain. Romaine has a slightly bitter, earthy flavor that complements the saltiness of ham and the nuttiness of Swiss cheese. It adds a fresh, green note without overpowering the other ingredients.
Pickles
Pickles add a bright, tangy contrast to ham and swiss pinwheels. They also cut through the richness of Swiss cheese and the saltiness of ham with their sharp, vinegary bite. They add a crisp texture that complements the soft tortilla, meat, and cheese.
Preparation, Servings, and Storage
These delicious little bite sized rolls are very simple to prepare in as little as 10 minutes! They require zero cooking time, just add the ingredients, roll it up, refrigerate for a half hour, and slice! Making these ham and swiss pinwheels also uses very minimal dishes to prepare, so there are few dishes to wash afterwards. This recipe yields 24 ham and swiss pinwheels, which is perfect for filling a party platter, bringing on the go, or packing in lunchboxes. Even more, they stay fresh in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, making a great meal prep option.
