California club with Creamy Cucumber Slaw

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

California club sandwiches are an absolute delight. They bring together a medley of flavors and textures that make each bite unforgettable. The addition of creamy avocados on a turkey sandwich is one of the best parts of it. This sandwich is served on a soft, fresh baked hoagie roll made from my Italian Bread. They are toasted in the oven to achieve that perfect golden-brown exterior, while the broiler melts the cheese.

But let’s not overlook the true game changer: the creamy cucumber slaw. This is my family’s favorite sandwich. It is a definite must try, I know you will love this.

Let’s talk about this addictingly delicious cucumber slaw

The dressing of the slaw is a sensational blend of rich mayonnaise, sharp vinegar, zesty Dijon mustard, and aromatic garlic. It is meticulously seasoned with fragrant oregano, a sprinkle of salt, and freshly cracked pepper. These ingredients create a creamy dressing that bursts with flavor, enhancing the entire sandwich.

The slaw features cool and crispy cucumbers, vibrant red onion, savory black olives, and crunchy romaine lettuce. Together they provide a refreshing contrast to the rich flavors of the sandwich. The selection of mini cucumbers is particularly noteworthy. Min cucumbers have a crunchier texture, thinner skin, lower seed count, and delightful sweetness make them the perfect addition. The difference between mini cucumbers and their larger counterparts is significant, offering a unique bite that enhances the overall taste. While the creamy cucumber slaw adds an unbelievable flavor, it also makes the sandwich undeniably messy. This is a small price to pay for its deliciousness. Just a heads-up—be sure to have plenty of napkins on hand and perhaps save this feast for a dining table rather than a picnic!

Preparation, Servings, and Storage

When it comes to preparation, this California club sandwich is simple to prepare, taking 15 minutes from start to finish. It’s an excellent choice for either a satisfying lunch or a quick dinner, yielding up to four hearty sandwiches.

However, it’s important to note that this sandwich is best enjoyed fresh. While the creamy cucumber slaw is indeed spectacular, the vinegar in the dressing tends to soften the vegetables, compromising their crisp texture if left overnight. If you anticipate having some ingredients leftover, a clever strategy is to store the dressing separately from the vegetables and mix them together just before serving. The dressing itself has a good shelf life, remaining fresh in the refrigerator for up to one week.
