Dark Rye Bread-Friday Night Fish Fry

This recipe for dark rye bread is a delightful complement to a classic Wisconsin fish fry. As every proud Wisconsinite will attest, a platter brimming with golden-fried fish, crunchy Coleslaw, and creamy Potato Salad is always accompanied by a generous slice of rich, buttered dark rye bread topped with a thick slice of raw onion. To elevate this traditional meal, don’t forget the state’s signature cocktail—the Old Fashioned.

What is a supper club

Known as a cherished institution in Wisconsin, supper clubs are the heartbeat of local culinary culture. Boasting more establishments than any other state, these family-owned, nostalgic restaurants exude a warm, inviting atmosphere. Dining in a super club feels like a home away from home. While they are renowned for their exceptional fish fries served on the weekend, they also uphold a wealth of other dining traditions that capture the essence of Wisconsin hospitality. If you’re yearning for that comforting fish fry experience and want to impress your loved ones with a cozy supper club setting right in your own kitchen, why not try whipping up this mouthwatering recipe?

Preparation, Servings, and Storage of Dark Rye Bread

This straightforward recipe for dark rye bread features just a handful of ingredients. The preparation process takes approximately 10 minutes, followed by two rise times. The first rise lasting ninety minutes, and the second for sixty minutes. The dough takes shape in a loaf pan which helps develop its characteristic texture.

This recipe yields one hearty loaf of bread, but feel free to double it for two! Thanks to its denser structure compared to airy white bread, this rye loaf retains moisture and flavor longer, lasting about five to seven days at room temperature. It also freezes beautifully for up to three months. I recommend slicing the bread before freezing it, allowing for easy access without the need to thaw an entire loaf. Though this recipe shines alongside a fish fry, it is also a delightful choice for sandwiches, and ham sandwiches, in particular, reach new heights of deliciousness when nestled between two slices of this rich, flavorful bread.
