French Cheese Puffs (Gougères)

Light, airy French cheese puffs (gougères) made with sharp cheddar. Crispy on the outside, cheesy on the inside, and fun to make for appetizers or finger food.

Ingredients
 

  • 1/2 cup Butter
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 1/2 tsp Sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • 4 Eggs
  • cups Sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 400℉.
  • In a 2 quart saucepan, bring butter and water to a boil.
  • Once boiling, remove from the heat and add the flour, salt and pepper. Mix the ingredients with a silicone spatula until the dough forms and is a smooth texture.
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes (get the shredded cheese ready while it's cooling.)
  • Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing into the dough after each egg is added.
  • Add the shredded cheese to the dough and mix in thoroughly.
  • Fill the pastry bag with the dough using either no tip or a wide circle tip.
  • Pipe out the dough onto the parchment paper lined sheet pan. (about the size of a golf ball)
  • Bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until golden and puffed.
  • Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
